Pre-Care

Before a teeth whitening treatment, the focus is on protecting your teeth and gums as much as possible, to reduce the chances of post-treatment sensitivity. The night before and the morning of your treatment, brush your teeth very gently, taking care to avoid your gums as much as possible. This will reduce the chances of developing abrasions on the gum line.

Don’t floss, as you could cut your gums, which will cause discomfort after your treatment. Using your regular mouthwash is fine. There is no need to avoid food before your teeth whitening treatment. In fact, you won’t be able to eat for a few hours after your appointment, so have a meal beforehand that will keep you full.

In-Office Teeth Whitening

An in-office teeth whitening treatment is similar to the one you would get at your dentist. The solution is carbamide peroxide based therefore it results in very little to no sensitivity, unlike hydrogen peroxide bleaching solutions.

If you do your teeth whitening treatment after having your teeth cleaned, you will achieve better results. Whitening your teeth while there is plaque or tartar still on them may not give you the best results you are looking for.

Post-Care

Please keep in mind that your teeth are extremely porous for several days following your teeth whitening procedure. For the next 48 hours please avoid foods and beverages that will most likely stain in your teeth, including but not limited to:

X Coffee and tea

X Colored soft/alcoholic drinks

X Red wine and fruit juice

X Tobacco products

X Dark stain foods: soy sauce, chocolate, berries, red meat.

If it would leave a stain on a white shirt, avoid it for 24–48 hours. It is common for you to experience sensitivity after the procedure. Should that occur, use Sensodyne (or any other anti-sensitivity) toothpaste. Some individuals are more sensitive than others, if you feel discomfort you may take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen.
